Alert! Assam Police Tracking Pro-ULFA Social Media Posts

The sources added that three more Facebook sites are being intensively monitored.

Digital Desk: Due to rumours of new recruits joining the Paresh Baruah-led United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I), the Assam Police is keeping a watchful eye on the activities of the banned outfits, reports said.

As per police sources, in addition to maintaining vigilance on the ground, the Assam Police is also scrutinizing social media for pro-ULFA-I posts and articles. Moreover, the Assam Police approached the Facebook (FB) authority and successfully deleted six pro-ULFA-I FB sites in the last six months.

The sources added that three more Facebook sites are being intensively monitored.

In reference to the recent warning to Superintendents of Police worried about prospective militant attacks on oil and gas industry properties in the state, the source said that the initiative was taken after information regarding increased activity by ULFA, NSCN, and PLA (Manipur) cadres in their border strongholds.

Reportedly, the Assam Police has information about nearly 70 young people who have joined the ULFA-I in the previous two years. But, during the same time, 64 youths, including senior cadres like Drishti Rajkhowa, Jiban Moran, Montu Saikia, Udgiron Asom, Dhoni Asom, and Bhaskar Bora, returned to the mainstream.

Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police (Special Branch) Hiren Chandra Nath said that there could be several reasons for the recent surge in people joining the ULFA-I, the most apparent of which is that most youths and even married people that join the banned outfit expect to benefit greatly if the ULFA gets involved in the peace process. However, the ADGP stated in the context of future rewards that those who joined the ULFA-I after it announced a unilateral ceasefire in 2021 will lose all government resettlement options, even if they now return to the mainstream for whatever reason.

He added that the reason behind this move is that such youths will be held accountable if the law-and-order situation deteriorates again after the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) was lifted from numerous Assam districts to speed up the state's peace process.
