Cabinet approves the construction of 4 new medical colleges, 4 new bridges over the Brahmaputra

The proposed fourth Brahmaputra bridge will connect Palashbari in the south to Sualkuchi in the north, cutting the distance between LGBI Airport and the lower Assam districts by 25 kilometres.

Digital Desk: The Assam cabinet approved the construction of a fourth bridge over the Brahmaputra here on Tuesday, which will connect Palashbari in the south to Sualkuchi and shorten the distance between LGBI Airport and Assam districts by 25 km and ensure seamless connectivity to Sualkuchi and Amingaon from the airport.

In October, during her visit here, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the state's plans to build this 4.8-kilometre four-lane bridge.

According to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, this bridge under the 'Assam Bridge Project-II' is most likely to cost INR 3,197 crore.

The cabinet also approved a contract to develop a boat terminal and riverine infrastructure at Guwahati Gateway Ghat for INR 289.45 crore.

This will combine connectivity and secure communication in the ferry ghats of Guwahati and North Guwahati and increase the Brahmaputra's tourism potential.

The cabinet also approved the construction of four new medical colleges and hospitals in Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Golaghat, and Morigaon, funded by NABARD Infrastructure Development Assistance (NIDA) and carried out by Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority (AIFA) at a total cost of INR 2,000 crore.
