Climate Change: Assam To Experience Rising Heat, Lesser Rainfall by 2040

The prediction is provided by the School of Climate Change and Sustainability, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. Speaking at the Guwahati Press Club on Friday, Dr. Santonu Goswami, a professor of Azim Premji University says that the alarming forecast has been provided given the current conditions of the medium emission of the shared socio-economic pathway (SSP) 2-4.5 scenario.

Addressing the media, Dr. Goswami says, "For the first time in India, we released climate data projection quite openly, making them freely available to the public. Anyone can directly download the data for any district in India. We are interested in the scenario in the northeast. That is why we have decided to come here and introduce the data set to everyone."

The data provided by Dr. Goswami suggests that while Assam will face a severe rise in temperatures across all districts, winters in Assam will also become warmer than before.

While terrible drought and excessive floods have already affected people's lives and livelihood in Assam, the monsoon season in the state has also become unpredictable due to prolonged dry spells and torrential rain. The significant transformation in weather has particularly affected Assam's agrarian economy, where farmers depend on paddy for their daily bread and butter.
