NEFR aims to establish trade links with Bhutan
A business development meeting was recently organised by the (NFR) Alipurduar division between NF Railway and representatives from the Government of Bhutan.

Digital Desk: Northeast Frontier Railway's (NFR) Alipurduar division recently held a business development meeting with delegations from the Government of Bhutan, including representatives from their foreign ministry, trade groups, and chambers of commerce, notably.

The conference was arranged to foster economic cooperation between NF Railway and the Government of Bhutan as well as promote logistics avenues for future links with Bhutan.

Bhutan representatives visited Hasimara train station, where NF Railway is strategically developing facilities to facilitate commerce with Bhutan. To improve logistical trade with Bhutan, a siding and warehouse are being built in partnership with the Central Warehousing Corporation.

Furthermore, Indian Railways has already delivered the first shipment of commodities to Bhutan via a multi-modal route involving 75 utility cars.

The trucks were transported from Chennai to Hasimara railway station on October 28, 2022, by a New Modified Goods (NMG) rake, a rake specially built to handle light motor vehicles (LMV). The shipment was then transported by road to Bhutan.

The delegation plans to visit Changrabandha Station in the meantime. Discussions were also held about the movement of autos, cement, stone commodities, and other commodities, as well as improving people-to-people connections and tourism growth.

The Alipurduar division presented the idea of railroads as the primary environmentally friendly method of transportation for goods logistics and as a sustainable choice for public transportation in the nation and also in South-East Asia to the representatives of the Bhutan government.

The cost-competitiveness and strategic capabilities of the railway to quickly and in large quantities carry goods to markets throughout India and Bhutan were explained to the representatives of the Bhutanese government.

According to a press release, Indian Railways has already begun new cross-border connection projects by building a broad-gauge railway route from Kokrajhar in India to Gelephu in Bhutan.
