It's been 2 months, 19-Year-Old still in Assam Jail under the UAPA act for her Post bearing Banned Organization

Barshashree Buragohain was detained and booked under the UAPA Act for her Facebook post in Uriamghat, Golaghat district.

Digital Desk: A 19-year-old Assam girl has been imprisoned since May for allegedly supporting a banned activist group on Facebook. In the face of rising calls for her release and social media reaction, police have stated that her detention was "permitted by law."

On May 18, this year, Barshashree Buragohain was detained and accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Uriamghat, Golaghat district, for her post titled 'Akou Korim Rashtra Droh' (will again rebel against the nation).

Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh said, "This is not a case of sedition; it is a case of waging war against a nation, which is unnegotiable for any law enforcement body, and so the case has been lodged in accordance with the mandate of law."

It comes after the parents of the second-year Mathematics student at Jorhat's DCB College pleaded with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the police to let her out of jail so she may take her examinations. The exams are set to take place later this month.

Ms. Buragohain, on the other hand, is likely to miss the tests since police have stated that they are "legally obligated" to prosecute her.

In a tweet, Mr. Singh stated, "Her Facebook post contains a clear incitement to wage war against the State. We are legally obligated to punish anyone who publicly expresses support for a banned organization and declares a desire to wage war against the Indian State. A charge sheet should be submitted in a competent court of law after the proper process. Allow the law to take its own course ".

Meanwhile, Assam Police DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta briefed reporters yesterday, "She was not arrested because she wrote a poem. She was arrested for enticing others to join the gang."
