Digital desk: The occasion of Republic Day, 2025 has brought immense pride to Assam as 25 personnel from the state were recognized among the 942 awardees of Gallantry and Service medals. It was declared by the Ministry of Home Affairs to honor the bravery and dedication of individuals in Police, Fire, Home Guard, Civil Defence, and Correctional Service across the nation.
The Medal of Gallantry (GM) was awarded to a total of 95 recipients across the nation who were honored for their acts of conspicuous bravery like saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, and apprehending criminals. The regional distribution includes 28 from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 28 from Jammu & Kashmir, 3 from the North-East including Assam, and 36 from other regions.
The President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) was awarded to 101 personnel for exemplary contributions and remarkable service records. In addition to this, 746 individuals received the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) in recognition of their dedication and resourceful service. Assam contributed significantly to this rally, emphasizing the state's vital role in maintaining national security and public order.
The 25 awardees from Assam showcase the state's resilience and dedication in addressing the unique challenges of the North-East. Their efforts in insurgency-prone and remote areas underline their courage and professionalism in upholding law and order.
The Police Service received the majority of accolades with 78 of the 95 Gallantry Medals and 634 of the 746 Meritorious Service Medals. Other sectors like Fire, Civil Defence, Home Guard, and Correctional Service were also lauded for their crucial character.
