​ICC rankings: Shubman Gill overtakes Babar Azam to become No 1 ODI batter; Siraj claims top bowling spot

Digital Desk: In the most recent ICC rankings, which were revealed on Wednesday, November 8, Shubman Gill surpassed Babar Azam to take the top spot among ODI batters in the world, while Mohammed Siraj regained the top spot among ODI bowlers.

With 830 rating points, Shubman Gill surpassed Babar Azam, who now stands at No. 2 with 824 points. In 41 innings, he also became the second-fastest person to reach the No. 1 spot. After 38 innings, MS Dhoni is still the fastest to reach that mark.

This year, Shubman has scored the most runs in both international cricket and one-day formats. This year, he is also very close to reaching the milestone of 2000, making history as the first hitter to do so.

Though Shubman Gill leads the one-day international run scorers in 2023, he hasn't exactly performed at his best during the ongoing World Cup. After missing India's first two matches due to dengue, Gill has now struck two half-centuries, including a brilliant 92 against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who has had an incredible year in one-day international cricket, began the World Cup slowly but then picked up the pace and put on an outstanding performance against Sri Lanka—the same side he demolished in the Asia Cup final in September by taking six wickets.

The other three bowlers in the top ten are Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav.

Following Pakistan's match against Bangladesh, Shaheen Shah Afridi, who had risen to the top of the bowling rankings, fell five spots to rank No. 5. Afridi had a difficult day as he bowled Pakistan's most expensive spell in World Cup history against New Zealand.

While England and Pakistan play in their last league match at Bangalore's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Shaheen will have an opportunity to make amends.
