Instead, something unexpected happened that anyone imagined.......
Digital desk: Virat Kohli's argument with Naveen-ul-Haq and Gautam Gambhir last year created a major IPL controversy and captured the attention of the entire world. As responses from all over the world began to pour in, the Kohli vs. Naveen/Gambhir drama became the most talked-about topic of the 2023 Indian Premier League.
When the two former India teammates met this year, it was thought that the record would be changed because the incident became known as probably the worst argument in IPL history since Kohli vs. Gambhir Part 1 in 2013.
Instead, something unexpected happened that anyone imagined. A completely unexpected scene played out in front of our eyes as the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengalore played.
It involved Kohli and Gambhir hugging, burying the hatchet, and moving on, maybe bringing an end to one of the most talked-about rivalries in Indian cricket. Gambhir and Kohli go back a long way. From being teammates to opponents in the IPL, and getting in each other's faces, their equation has seen all kinds of ups and downs.
Even though the Indian Premier League has concluded with 24 matches, the season has so far been quite calm. Aside from the Hardik Pandya leadership controversy at the Mumbai Indians, there haven't been many close finishes or major controversies.
Even though he is completely focused on the game and not on on-field arguments, Kohli talked about how quiet this season has been and how surprised he is by the public's response to his reconciliation with Gambhir.
"People are very disappointed with my behaviour. I hugged Naveen, and then the other day, Gauti bhai [Gautam Gambhir came and hugged me. Your masala is over so you're booing. We're not kids anymore," he said during an event organised by Asian Paints.
Last year's Kohli vs. Gambhir controversy had gotten out of control before the IPL. Even though Gambhir later said that the reason he waved had nothing to do with Kohli and was instead motivated by the insulting remarks being hurled at him, people weren't persuaded.
Gambhir reportedly turned around a part of the audience was screaming "Kohli-Kohli" during the 2023 Asia Cup. Everywhere that Gambhir went at the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, he was mocked by nonstop chanting about Kohli.
Not only has he made peace with Gambhir, as Kohli pointed out. As the whole country anticipated a showdown between the two during the India vs. Afghanistan match in Delhi during the 2023 World Cup, Kohli and Naveen performed a dramatic turn of events, letting go of old grudges and ending the events that transpired that evening in Lucknow's Ekana Stadium.
