Digital Desk: Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill set the record for the joint-highest opening partnership for India in T20Is after their opening stand of 165 runs against the West Indies on Saturday in the fourth of a five-match series in Florida.
It may be noted that in a 2017 match at Indore, KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma scored 165 runs together against Sri Lanka for the first wicket.
The 176-run partnership that Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson put together against Ireland last year is the highest partnership for India in T20Is.
Meanwhile, Usman Ghani and Hazratullah Zazai, who together hit 236 runs for Afghanistan against Ireland in 2019, have the biggest T20I partnership ever. It also has the highest opening partnership in T20Is.
Jaiswal set a record for becoming the youngest Indian opener to reach 50 in a T20I at just 21 years.
However, Rohit Sharma, who scored a half-ton against South Africa in 2007 at the age of 20 years, is the youngest Indian to register a T20I fifty.
India's victory brought the series' score to 2-2, with one game remaining to be played today.
Following the spells of Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav, West Indies dropped to 57 for the loss of four wickets in 6.5 overs. Shimron Hetmyer scored 61 runs off 39 balls, and Shai Hope scored 45 runs in 29 deliveries, including three boundaries and two sixes, to help West Indies surpass the 100-run mark. Four sixes and three fours were part of his inning. He led West Indies to 178 at the end of their 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets to Odean Smith.
However, the strongest Indian bowlers were Arshdeep Singh (3/38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/26) whose relentless barrage of pace and spin troubled the lads from the Caribbean. With one wicket each, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Mukesh Kumar ended the match.
With 179 runs to win, India got off to the kind of start they were hoping for as openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill piled up runs on the flat, batting-friendly surface and brought the team close to a victory almost single-handedly.
However, that was not to be, as Gill was dismissed by Romario Shepherd for 77 runs off 47 balls, having scored three fours and five sixes. Jaiswal ended the chase with a score of 84 not out in 51 balls, which included 11 fours and three sixes before Tilak Varma entered the batting order.
With his daring play, Jaiswal earned the title of "Player of the Match," leading India to victory and a 2-2 tie in the series.
