If India wins their final Super 12 match against Zimbabwe, they will be...
Digital Desk: With their victory over Bangladesh, the Indian cricket team advanced to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals from Group 2. However, with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa still in the race, a place in the knockouts is far from guaranteed. Pakistan's victory over South Africa has thrown the semi-finals qualification scenario wide open. If India wins their final Super 12 match against Zimbabwe, they will be assured of the group winner's position. But, what happens if the match is washed out?
Rain has been the biggest villain in this year's T20 World Cup, washing out many matches. Although the rain curse hasn't been as lethal in Group 2, it has caused some significant matches to be abandoned, creating a chaotic situation from the perspective of semi-finals qualification.
India now holds the top spot with 6 points, followed by South Africa (5 points) and Pakistan (4 points), who are in second and third place, respectively. If India's match against Zimbabwe does not include a 5-over-a-side match, the two teams will split a point. In that situation, India's total would be 7.
In this case, India would reach the semifinals but wouldn't be assured to advance as the group winner. South Africa would have the possibility to grab the top spot in the group if they defeated the Netherlands, owing to a higher Net Run Rate.
Also, the winner of the Pakistan and Bangladesh match can only reach the semi-finals in this situation if South Africa goes down to the Netherlands. A Proteas victory would eliminate both Pakistan and Bangladesh from the competition since South Africa and India would each have 7 points.
It should also be noted that no reserve day is scheduled for any of the T20 World Cup group matches. Only the semi-finals and finals have the option of triggering a reserve day in the event of rain.
