Elvera Britto, the eldest of three famous Britto sisters (the other two are Rita and Mae), dominated the domestic circuit from 1960 to 1967, leading Karnataka to seven national titles. She was India's representative against Australia, Sri Lanka, and Japan.
Elvera was only the second woman hockey player, after Anne Lumsden, to receive the Arjuna Award in 1965. (1961).
Elvera, like her sisters, was always single; Hockey India mourned Elvera's death.
President of Hockey India Gyanendro Ningombam said, "It is saddening to learn about the passing away of Elvera Britto. She was ahead of her times and achieved so much in women's hockey and continued to serve the sport as an administrator with the state."
Hockey India expressed their grievances and said, "On behalf of Hockey India and the entire hockey fraternity, we would like to express our deepest condolences to her family."
