Digital Desk: Elon Musk, the new ceo of Twitter, has stated that he will provide "amnesty" to suspended accounts, which internet safety experts anticipate will lead to an increase in harassment, hate speech, and disinformation.

Musk made the announcement on Thursday after asking for votes in a poll put on his timeline to reinstate accounts that had not "broken the law or participated in severe spam." The yes vote received 72% of the total.

"The public has spoken. The amnesty period begins next week. "Vox Populi, Vox Dei," Musk said on Twitter, referring to the Latin phrase that means "the voice of the people, the voice of God."

Musk used the same Latin phrase after publishing a similar poll last weekend before restoring former President Donald Trump's account, which Twitter had suspended for promoting a Capitol insurgency on January 6, 2021. Trump has stated that he will no longer use Twitter, although he has not cancelled his account.

Such internet surveys are far from realistic and are quite prone to being manipulated by bots.
