It is celebrating its 190th Raising Day today, March 24 .On this occasion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has sent his warm wishes to the personnel of the Assam Rifles and their family members on their raising day.
Assam Rifles celebrates Raising Day
Assam Rifles Raising Day is a day when India's oldest paramilitary force came into existence i.e., in 1835.
The Assam Rifles better known as the "Sentinels of the Northeast" or "Friends of the Hill People" are charge of maintaining security in India's northeastern states, protecting the Indo-Myanmar border, and carrying out counter-insurgency operations.
It is under the direct administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the operational control of the Indian Army.
It was on this date, March 24, that the oldest para-military organisation, Assam Rifles, was formed. It was originally raised as Cachar Levy by the British to keep the law and order in the lawless northeastern state of India intact. The force went through several organisational changes and nameplates over the years, before assuming its final title of Assam Rifles in 1917.
24th March is also important as it formally commemorates the formation of this paramilitary unit, whose role has been crucial in border security of northeastern India, insurgent operations, and disaster relief. The observance of the Raising Day celebrates the glory, sacrifices, and contributions made by the Assam Rifles to national defense.
