The accused, who resided in the same building as Dharmesh, had been sharing a laundry room. Dharmesh was leaving the laundry room when the neighbour stabbed him to death.

Digital Desk: An Indian man, identified as Dharmesh Kathireeya (27), was the victim of an alleged racist murder in the town of Rockland, Ontario, Canada.

Dharmesh, who hailed from Bhavnagar district in Gujarat, was allegedly stabbed by a white man, as per reports. The accused man of around 60 years, had earlier hurled racial abuse at Dharmesh and his wife.

The accused, who resided in the same building as Dharmesh, had been sharing a laundry room. Dharmesh was leaving the laundry room when the neighbour stabbed him to death.

An online fundraiser for the victim's family said, "It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we share the tragic and sudden loss of our dear friend, Dharmesh. On April 4th, 2025, Dharmesh was taken from us in an unprovoked hate crime and senseless attack by a neighbor. The violence that ended his life has left his family, friends, and the entire community in shock and mourning."

Dharmesh had been in Canada as an international student since 2019 and was on a work permit. He was working at the Milano Pizza Rockland.

Indian High Commission in Ottawa posted on X, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in Rockland near Ottawa, due to stabbing. Police have stated a suspect has been taken into custody. We are in close contact through a local community association to provide all possible assistance to bereaved kin."
