  • Twenty-one more lives were lost to the devastating floods across Assam in the past 24 hours, pushing the cumulative death toll this year to 31
  • A significant nine of the latest fatalities were women and children

The relentless monsoon rains and surging rivers have exacerbated Assam's flood crisis, claiming 21 more lives over the last 24 hours. This grim statistic elevates the total flood-related deaths in the state to 31 this year. Disturbingly, women and children account for nine of the recently reported fatalities, underscoring the severe impact on vulnerable populations.

According to data released by the state disaster management authority late Tuesday night, four children and five women were among those who succumbed to the floodwaters during this critical period. Sivasagar district reported four of these new deaths, while Jorhat accounted for one. Sivasagar continues to be the hardest-hit region, with its cumulative death toll now standing at 13, the highest among all affected districts.

The tragic loss of young lives highlights an alarming trend. These recent child deaths follow an incident on July 20 in Jorhat, where two teenage girls, 14-year-old Susmita Mardha and Chuniya Pahariya from Panbari village, were swept away by the powerful currents of the swollen Doi Jaan stream. Additionally, a boy was reported missing in Karbi Anglong in a separate flood-related incident.

In response to the growing casualties, Titabor MLA Dhiraj Gowala visited the bereaved families in Jorhat, offering his condolences. He issued a heartfelt appeal to parents across the affected areas, urging them to exercise extreme caution and ensure children are kept away from rivers, streams, and other water bodies during the ongoing monsoon season to prevent further tragedies.
