  • Assam's tea industry is strategically moving beyond traditional black teas, with Bhergaon Tea Estate's rare yellow tea fetching a remarkable ₹13,334 per kg at a recent Guwahati auction, signaling a strong push towards high-value specialty products

In a significant development reflecting Assam's evolving tea landscape, a rare yellow tea from Bhergaon Tea Estate in Udalguri district recently secured an impressive ₹13,334 per kilogram at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) Sale No. 29. This premium price for a 2-kg lot underscores the industry's growing focus on diversifying into high-value, specialty teas to tap into lucrative domestic and international markets.

The exclusive lot was skillfully sold by leading tea broker J. Thomas & Co. Pvt. Ltd. and acquired by Guwahati-based Vedanta Tea Company. Reports indicate the meticulously crafted tea is destined for a café in Rajasthan, highlighting the increasing demand for unique, handcrafted brews across India.

This notable sale is part of a broader strategic shift within Assam's venerable tea sector. Producers are increasingly exploring and cultivating a variety of specialty teas, including white tea, oolong, purple tea, and matcha. This diversification strategy aims to enhance value realization and secure a competitive edge in an increasingly crowded global market, moving beyond the traditional reliance on black tea varieties.

Yellow tea, originating from China, stands among the world’s most exclusive tea styles due to its intricate and time-consuming production process. It undergoes a distinct "yellowing" stage after initial heat treatment, a critical step that imparts a mellow liquor with delicate floral notes and a remarkably smoother taste profile compared to conventional green teas. Its limited production quantities further contribute to its rarity and premium market positioning, making Bhergaon Tea Estate's achievement a testament to Assam's innovative spirit in tea cultivation.
