Digital Desk: Despite significant expansion in vehicular movement, Assam's longest road bridge, which will be inaugurated in Guwahati on Wednesday, will be able to manage increasing traffic for at least the next 15 years, officials claimed on Tuesday.
While the artwork was completed by Monday night, debris from beneath the 2.63 km long flyover from Maligaon to Kamakhya Gate was cleaned on the eve of the inauguration. The four-lane bridge was finished in three years, despite the fact that Covid-19 occasionally delayed building.
The flyover, which cost Rs 420.75 crore to build, was supposed to be inaugurated in mid-April. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister, will dedicate the bridge.
"For the next 15 years, this major flyover will easily manage vehicular traffic without causing traffic congestion. The construction was done with the 2.5% annual growth in vehicular movement in mind," stated a senior official of the state PWD.
According to PWD data, around 4,500 vehicles pass through this route every day, where the flyover was built to ensure smooth vehicular circulation. This Maligaon flyover is a major route for travellers entering Guwahati's centre from the west.
According to officials, once the bridge is completed, enhanced roadways beneath the flyover would allow commuters and cars to move freely between different neighbourhoods in and around Maligaon.
The murals depicting Assamese wildlife, art, and culture, as well as the VIBGYOR-colored bridge, will be a sight to behold with decorative lights in the evening.
"The structure (the flyover) is expected to last 100 years. It's a magnificent structure that will stand for decades," he remarked.
Travellers will soon be able to utilise the under-construction) alternate route to Kamakhya temple through the flyover's enlarged wing. "Once completed, this alternate route to Kamakhya will be the quickest route to the temple along the Brahmaputra river bank." Many tourists arriving at Guwahati Airport will prefer it," remarked the senior official.
