Digital Desk: The national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius or above on 25 days so far this summer season. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, this number is the highest number of such days since 2012.
For 30 days in 2012, Delhi reported a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius or higher. According to the data, the number of such days was 35 in 2010, the most in the 1951–2022 period.
Last year, there were six such days in the capital, and three in 2020, the fewest since 1997, when there were only two.
On 16 days in 2019, 19 days in 2018, 15 days each in 2017 and 2016, 18 days in 2015, 15 days in 2014, and 17 days in 2013, Delhi experienced a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius or higher.
According to the records, there was no such day in Delhi in 1953, 1954, or 1971.
In India this year, summer arrived early, with harsh heatwaves scorching sections of the country in March and April, despite scarce rains and feeble western disturbances.
With a monthly average maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius, Delhi had its second-hottest April since 1951.
This year, the city has had six heatwaves, the deadliest of which occurred in mid-May when the highest temperature reached 49 degrees Celsius in certain areas.
The most recent heat wave began on June 2 in the absence of major western disturbances and a barrage of hot, dry westerly winds.
