  • As floodwaters slowly withdraw from Assam's Dergaon constituency, residents are grappling with a fresh wave of challenges, including unsanitary conditions, snake infestations, and the looming threat of disease outbreaks

Following a period of severe flooding, communities in Dergaon, particularly within the Kakodonga area, are now facing a dire situation as stagnant water, accumulated waste, and a proliferation of flies create highly unsanitary living environments. The receding waters have left behind not just debris but also a heightened presence of snakes and other venomous creatures, prompting widespread fear among locals.

Residents describe their homes as unsafe, with many having endured waterlogged conditions for several days. Even as the water level drops slightly, the threat from these creatures entering their dwellings remains constant. The cumulative effect of these conditions has led to serious concerns about potential disease outbreaks.

Local residents express frustration, alleging that the health department has not demonstrated the necessary urgency in addressing the deteriorating public health situation. Many feel abandoned to the aftermath of the floods, pleading for basic supplies to manage the crisis themselves. They have specifically requested tarpaulin sheets for temporary shelter, along with bleaching powder and phenyl to disinfect their surroundings and make their homes habitable once more.

The floods have severely impacted a significant portion of the constituency, with estimates suggesting nearly 10,000 people in Dergaon and approximately 25,000 livestock have been affected. The current crisis underscores the critical need for immediate intervention to prevent a secondary disaster in the form of widespread illness and further distress for the flood-weary populace.
