Police in Silchar successfully intervened in an alleged child trafficking attempt on July 25, rescuing a two-and-a-half-year-old child and apprehending six individuals involved in the illicit transaction. The swift action by law enforcement prevented the completion of a child sale, underscoring the vigilance required against such heinous crimes in the region.
The operation unfolded at a rented residence in Berenga, Silchar, following specific intelligence. Officials reported that the child was allegedly being handed over for a sum of ₹55,000. During the raid, police not only rescued the toddler but also seized ₹57,900 in cash from the scene, which is believed to be connected to the attempted transaction.
Among those arrested were the child's parents, identified as Rajmul Ali and Rosna Begum, residents of French Nagar Forest Village under Dholai Police Station. The alleged buyer, Sultana Begum Laskar from Jhanjarbali in Sonai, who reportedly desired to adopt or obtain a child, was also taken into custody. Additionally, police apprehended two intermediaries, Swapna Begum Laskar and her husband Bahar Uddin, who allegedly facilitated the arrangement between the parties.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Sultana Begum Laskar, who reportedly has no children, was introduced to Swapna Begum Laskar and her husband, who then reportedly contacted Rajmul Ali and Rosna Begum. The child's biological parents reportedly have four other sons. The incident highlights a disturbing network involved in the illegal trade of children, prompting a deeper look into such activities across the Barak Valley.
