  • Assam Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Dass has hinted at a future increase in the state's constituencies, noting the new Dibrugarh complex is being built to accommodate 200 MLAs

Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Dass has indicated the potential for an increase in the number of Assembly constituencies across the state in the future. Speaking recently after reviewing the master plan for the upcoming legislative complex in Dibrugarh, Mr. Dass revealed that the new facility is being designed to accommodate up to 200 members, significantly more than the current strength of 126 legislators.

The Speaker emphasised that this enhanced seating capacity aims to future-proof the building, ensuring it can accommodate additional legislators should the strength of the House increase without requiring subsequent structural modifications or expansion. His remarks followed an inspection of the construction site at Khanikar on Monday, where he assessed the progress of the ambitious project.

Beyond the main assembly hall, the government is also re-evaluating initial plans for residential accommodation for legislators. Originally envisioned for 126 units, the proposal is now being revised to include around 175 residential units, further underscoring a forward-looking approach to the state's legislative infrastructure.

The new Assembly complex is a cornerstone of the Assam Government’s broader strategy to establish Dibrugarh as the state’s second capital. The project, for which the government has sanctioned nearly Rs 284 crore, represents a significant investment in regional development and administrative decentralisation.
