Guwahati: Assam's devastating flood situation saw its death toll climb to 11 on Tuesday after a man in Sivasagar district was swept away by raging waters while attempting to collect drinking water. The latest victim, identified as Amlan Gogoi from Betbari village, was reportedly attempting to navigate the treacherous floodwaters when the incident occurred. Despite immediate efforts to rush him to a nearby medical facility, doctors pronounced him dead.
Sivasagar remains the epicentre of the current deluge, bearing the brunt of the disaster. State disaster management officials reported that nearly 1.58 lakh individuals in the district alone have been impacted by the floods. The Dikhow River continues to flow significantly above its extreme flood level, exacerbating the crisis across numerous villages and towns in the area.
Across Assam, the floods continue to affect a total of over 3.10 lakh people spread across 11 districts. While Sivasagar accounts for the largest proportion of those displaced and impacted, other regions are also struggling with submerged lands and disrupted daily life. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with state authorities working to provide assistance to affected communities.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Raijor Dal chief and local MLA Akhil Gogoi has actively engaged in rescue efforts. Visiting several inundated villages by boat and interacting with affected families, Gogoi described the current crisis as an "unprecedented natural disaster," suggesting its scale and intensity surpass the typical annual floods the state experiences.
As floodwaters continue to engulf new areas and the Dikhow River shows no immediate signs of receding below danger levels, the focus remains on evacuation, providing essential supplies, and managing the unfolding humanitarian challenge across the affected districts.
