Digital Desk: In a gruesome incident, a 62-year-old Adivasi woman was critically injured in Lahowal of Dibrugarh district, Assam after she was assaulted by a mob over the suspicion of practising witchcraft. The injured woman, identified as Monika Sanga, a resident of Romai Tea Estate, was attacked by a group of 25 people on Monday at 1 No Rajgarh under the Lahowal police station.

She was later rescued by the Lahowal police near a river and rushed to the Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH). The police have vowed for a proper investigation into the matter.

The Lahowal Police arrested seven people for their alleged involvement in the brutal attack on the elderly woman. The arrested individuals are Suraj Sanga (31), Binod Sanga (60), Jamuna Sanga (30), Surajmoni Sanga (30), Sangita Sanga (30), Alisha Sanga (30), and Fulmoni Sanga (29).

Monika Sanga's husband said that a mob of 25 people attacked her over accusations of practising witchcraft in the area. She was held responsible for the illness of some of the villagers of the area.

After a confrontation with the couple, the mob forcefully entered their house and assaulted her. They dragged her and left near a river.

Witch hunting is one of the most brutal forms of violence against women in Assam, often stemming from superstitions and lack of awareness within different communities.
