The court had ordered the CBI to investigate corruption allegations related to Ghosh's tenure at RG Kar Medical College...

Digital Desk: In a significant development, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) recently raided the residence of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at the institution. The ED's actions are tied to a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), focusing on allegations of money laundering involving Ghosh.

Dr. Ghosh is currently in custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which arrested him on September 2, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The court had ordered the CBI to investigate corruption allegations related to Ghosh's tenure at RG Kar Medical College. On August 24, an FIR was officially registered against him in connection with these allegations.

In a legal move, Ghosh has challenged the Calcutta High Court’s decision by filing a petition in the Supreme Court. The plea, scheduled to be heard on September 6 by a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, seeks to overturn the high court’s order for a CBI probe.

The controversy surrounding Dr. Ghosh has led to further scrutiny, including a suspension of his membership by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata. This decision underscores the gravity of the allegations and the ongoing investigation.

Additionally, the CBI's investigation into the corruption case has been coupled with a separate, high-profile case involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. On August 9, the young woman was found dead in the institution's seminar hall, a case that has further intensified public and legal scrutiny. The CBI conducted a second round of polygraph tests on Ghosh on August 26 as part of their investigation into this tragic incident.

The Calcutta High Court has granted the CBI a three-week period to submit a progress report on both investigations, with the next update expected by September 17.
