Digital Desk: The recent abduction case involving members of the Veer Lachit Sena has uncovered a deeper investigation into an alleged large-scale extortion network operating across Assam under the guise of nationalist activities.

The chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Guwahati Police authorities and opposing organisations have  alleged Veer Lachit Sena of already operating a well-organized racketeering business- extorting money and young businessmen under threats and intimidation and fake donation drives.

According to Mrinal Deka, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), eight people have been arrested so far in connection with the abduction incident outside Pratiksha Hospital in Borbari on Sunday night. Among the people who have been arrested; five are of the Veer Lachit Sena, one of them being Biraj Ballav Kalita, the Education Secretary of the Guwahati unit. Two land brokers who were suspected to have helped in the crime have also been arrested by the police. One of the other accused, Biswajit Doley, had a criminal record of robbery in 2014.

During the investigation, police found the signature of Bikash Asom, the Chief Secretary of Veer Lachit Sena of Kamrup Metro unit that indicated he could have been involved in the extortions. Law enforcers believe that Bikash Asom is one of the important operatives of the extortion network of the organisation. More arrests will follow as the investigation goes on.

Meanwhile, a separate organisation, Lachit Sena, held a press conference at the Dispur Press Club demanding a complete ban on Veer Lachit Sena for its alleged role in abduction, extortion, and organised crime. The group also wanted Bikash Asom to be arrested immediately with the allegation that Veer Lachit Sena was playing with the Assamese nationalism to make money.

To make the matter clear, Lachit Sena said that it is not a related organisation to Veer Lachit Sena and has no connection with any criminal activity. This was said following the detention of Rantu Paniphukan, Chief Secretary of Veer Lachit Sena by the police during a press conference in the middle, Hotel Apollo Grand in Guwahati, a move that created a temporary tension at the press conference.

During a press conference, held in Sivasagar, Shrinkhal Chaliha  made an announcement that Bikash Asom has been expelled from the Veer Lachit Sena, including from all units of the organisation’s Kamrup district committees.
