Digital Desk: The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the state government’s proposed law against polygamy will include a minimum provision of seven years’ imprisonment for offenders . The bill is set to pass in the Assam Legislative Assembly on 25th November , the opening day of the next winter session.
Speaking at the launch of the second phase of the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Scheme in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said, “If a person marries another woman without legally divorcing his wife, there will be a provision of seven years or more imprisonment, irrespective of his religion. The accused can also a claim that his religion allows it, yet the BJP government will never allow polygamy in Assam.
Sarma emphasized that the given legislation is supposed to protect the dignity and rights of women in the state. We shall defend the honor of women in Assam by all means, he said.
Highlighting the success of the Nijut Moina Scheme, Sarma said the initiative has led to a sharp reduction in dropout rates among girls and a significant increase in enrolment at higher education levels. For the scheme, financial aid is granted to ten months annually - 1000 to Class 11 students, 1250 to first-year undergraduate students and 2500 to first-year postgraduate students and B.Ed. students.
