Digital desk : Tributes are pouring in for ace filmmaker and screenwriter Shyam Benegal. The Indian cinema legend breathed his last at the age of 90 at a hospital in Mumbai. He was suffering from a chronic kidney disease. The last rites of the 18 National Film Award recipient was held at the Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium in Mumbai on Tuesday with full state honours.


Amitabh Bacchan took to his X account and shared, "T 5233 - We have lost another stalwart of the Film Industry today..Shyam Benegal passes away..Prayers and condolences."


Shabana Azmi shared a shared a picture of the late filmmaker with funeral details on her Instagram story.


Actor and BJP MP Ravi Kishan said that it was a personal loss for him. Actors Akshay Kumar, Chiranjeevi Konidela, Shekhar Kapur also expressed their grief over the passing of the legendary filmmaker.


Filmmaker Nandita Das shared some pictures with Shyam Benegal and recalled the encouragement she received from him.  Veteran actor Raza Murad said that Benegal was a diamond.

Expressing his heartfelt grief, Annu Kapoor said, "He made an unforgettable contribution to the Hindi film industry. He gave me my first break in the film 'Mandi'. I pray that his soul rests in peace and that his wife and daughter get the strength to bear this loss."


Kamal Haasan in a X post said that India has lost the most humane storyteller. Karishma Kapoor also recalled her experience working with Shyam Benegal in Zubeidaa and the filmmaker's nuanced approach to storytelling.


Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi paid emotional farewell to the filmmaker. Several Bollywood celebrities were also present at the funeral.
