A police officer of Latasil police station said that Upasa was declared dead by the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital doctors. The police have registered a case and started investigating the matter.

Digital Desk: Former Assam Home Minister, the late Bhrigu Kumar Phukan's daughter Upasa Phukan (28) allegedly died by suicide after jumping from a two-storey residence in the Kharghuli area of Guwahati, police said. Preliminary reports suggested that she jumped from the second floor of her home, where she was staying with her mother.  

A police officer of Latasil police station said that Upasa was declared dead by the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital doctors. The police have registered a case and started investigating the matter.

He added that no suicide note was found in the house.

As per reports, she had been battling mental health issues for a long time and was under treatment. She had earlier attempted suicide. Yesterday, when her mother was busy with household work, she allegedly jumped from the second floor of the house.

Taking to X, Assam Agricultural Minister and AGP president Atul Bora said, "I am deeply saddened by the untimely and unfortunate demise of Upasa Phukan, daughter of Late Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, a prominent leader of the historic Assam Movement, senior AGP leader and former Home Minister of Assam. In this moment of profound grief, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray to the Almighty for the eternal peace of her departed soul. Om Shanti!"

Bhrigu Kumar Phukan was the home minister in the first AGP government from 1985. Phukan, who died in 2006, was a prominent leader of the historic Assam Movement.
