The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is constructing a new broad-gauge line from Bairabi, near Assam’s Hailakandi district, to Sairang, close to Aizawl.
Digital Desk: In a major development, Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP K. Vanlalvena revealed that the Railway Ministry is planning to extend the under-construction Bairabi-Sairang rail line right up to the India-Myanmar border, boosting connectivity and strategic reach in the Northeast.
In the next four to five months, Mizoram’s capital Aizawl is set to become the fourth capital city in the Northeast to be connected by rail. This milestone will be achieved once the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge line project is completed.

Speaking on the future of rail connectivity in Mizoram, Rajya Sabha MP K. Vanlalvena stated that preliminary surveys are underway to extend the Bairabi-Sairang railway line all the way to the Myanmar border. He highlighted that the project, once operational, could be a game-changer for the state—boosting economic growth and opening up new avenues for cross-border trade. The government is eyeing an ambitious expansion beyond Sairang, cutting through southern Mizoram to reach Zochachhuah, a village near the Myanmar border, aiming to strengthen regional ties and connectivity in the Northeast.
The large-scale Bairabi-Sairang rail project has been divided into four key sections — Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang.
The first segment, Bairabi to Hortoki, was commissioned in July last year, marking a major milestone.
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), the Northeast Frontier Railway is making all-out efforts to complete the remaining sections and commission the entire project at the earliest.
