Assam is likely to face an acute rainfall deficiency.

Digital Desk:  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released predictions indicating  above-normal seasonal rainfall that will cover most of India during the 2025 Southwest Monsoon period.  However, the data indicates that rainfall across Northeast, Northwest India and South Peninsular India is expected to see below-normal rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD)  released a statement that indicates above-normal seasonal rainfall will dominate most areas  except for Northwest India, along with Northeast India and South Peninsular India regions.

This forecasters comes amid growing concern about rainfall imbalance between regions, particularly in Assam. IMD data from March 2025 highlights a stark contrast in rainfall patterns across the state. While eastern Assam received excessive rainfall—Dhemaji recorded 187.2 mm, nearly double its normal 93.5 mm—western and southern districts experienced acute deficits.

Districts with severe shortfalls include:-
Goalpara: 2.7 mm vs. 49.5 mm (–95%)
Nagaon: –90%
Cachar: –80%
Darrang: –88%
Barpeta: –56%
Baksa: –63%
Kamrup Metro (Guwahati): 18.2 mm vs. 70 mm (–74%)

 Additionally, Kamrup Metro reached its highest temperature on 16th March at 35.4°C 

Looking ahead the IMD has also warned   of  above-normal temperatures  during the June–September  month. The temperature is likely to exceed levels while heat waves are likely to  threaten central and eastern regions together with the northwestern plains of India.
