Digital Desk: Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday, that the government has a plan to increase the number of women in the Indian Army.

Informing about the major initiatives, the Minister stated 20 vacancies for Women Army cadets per year have been allotted in National Defence Academy, Pune with effect from July last year.

He said that the Short Service Commission has 90 vacancies for women, including 10 more positions increased from June 2023.

He said that starting from June 2021, women officers could join Army Aviation as pilots, and that beginning in 2019, women could join the Indian Army's Corps of Military Police in other ranks.

According to the Minister, there would be a total of 1,212 women in the Army Medical Corps (AMC), 168 in the Army Dental Corps (ADC), and 3,841 in the Military Nursing Service (MNS) medical cadres of the Indian Army as of July 1, 2023.

As of January 1, 2023, 1,733 women are working as officers in the Indian Army overall (excluding AMC, ADC, and MNS).

Regarding the number of women in the medical and non-medical cadres of the Indian Army, as well as the government's aim to raise the proportion of women in the Indian Army, Bhatt responded to a question from CPI MP Santosh Kumar P.
