This honor not only showcases the potential of Indian tourism but also the dedication of the people of Kutch in particular...

Digital Desk: Dhordo, Gujarat, has been recognized as the "Best Tourism Village" in India by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The Indian government's Ministry of Tourism made this announcement on Thursday. Taking to X, the ministry stated, “Ministry of Tourism is pleased to announce that Dhordo in Gujarat has been honoured as the "Best Tourism Village" by the @UNWTO. This accolade reflects the village's exemplary contribution to sustainable and responsible tourism.”

Adjacent to the white Rann of Kutch, Dhordo is a small village renowned for its yearly Rann Utsav held in the winter months across the white Rann that separates Pakistan from India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's innovative leadership has allowed Dhordo to be developed as a destination for Sustainable Rural Tourism and included in the Global Tourism Map.

It represents a turning point in the joint endeavor to make India a premier travel destination. The inaugural meeting of the Tourism Working Group was held in Dhordo recently as part of the G20 India initiative. This significant occasion highlights the village's increasing significance in the international tourism ecosystem.

Meanwhile, taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Absolutely thrilled to see Dhordo in Kutch being celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. This honor not only showcases the potential of Indian tourism but also the dedication of the people of Kutch in particular.”

He further stated, “May Dhordo continue to shine and attract visitors from around the world! I’m sharing some memories of my visits to Dhordo in 2009 and 2015. I also invite you all to share your memories from your previous visits to Dhordo. This will inspire more people to visit. And, don’t forget to use #AmazingDhordo."

As a component of the UNWTO Tourism for Rural Development Program, the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO project was introduced in 2021. In addition to promoting sustainable practices, the program fights depopulation, advances innovation and value chain integration through tourism, and supports development and inclusion in rural areas.
