Digital Desk: Indian Railways introduced the first train-based Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) facility for its passengers.  The first trial operation of the advanced service was launched on 10th April 2025, abroad the 12110 Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express, which operated in Maharashtra. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw  shared a  video of the mobile ATM on his official X platform, highlighting the Railways' ongoing commitment to modernization and passenger convenience.

This "ATM on Wheels" initiative aligns with the Railway Board’s directive to explore new avenues for non-fare revenue generation. Train-based ATMs received their first trial after the meeting between vendors, which took place on 25th March, 2025. The mechanical team redesigned the pantry area of  Panchvati Express was converted to an ATM zone. Safety features of this initiative involved the installation of fire extinguishers coupled with destructive rubber padding and vibration-blocking bolts.

The innovation exists as a component of Indian Railways’ “Viksit Bharat 2047” mission that works to update facilities and improve passenger satisfaction. Railways completed track renewal work for 6,450 kilometers of railroad and carried out 8,550 turnout replacements to boost train speed to 130 kmph across 2,000 kilometers in the year 2024. They also expanded electrification to 3,210 route kilometers, increasing total electrified area to 97 percent and reaching renewable energy capacity of 2,014 MW.

Reliable station development is taking place across 1,337 stations through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Indian Railways successfully introduced the first Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and launched 136 Vande Bharat trains while running more than 21,000 special train routes during the peak period. The Kavach safety system installation on 10,000 locomotives and the existing training of 9,000 technicians at Indian Railways promote modernized growth through its operations for India.
