This illustrious touring party boasted an array of stars, including the likes of Wes Hall, Sonny Ramadhin, Basil Butcher, Jackie Hendriks, and Lance Gibbs. Among them was a promising 22-year-old left-handed batsman from Barbados, Garry Sobers. Few in the crowd could have fully grasped that they were witnessing a future icon, a player destined to be celebrated as arguably the greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced.
Sobers arrived in Assam already having made headlines. Just eight months prior, he had stunned the cricketing world by scoring an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in Kingston, setting a new record for the highest individual score in Test history at the time.
