Following consultation with all stakeholders, Birla stated that he will set a date and time for a discussion on it.

Digital Desk: Following a head count of more than 50 MPs as required by the rules, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday approved a vote of no confidence introduced by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi against the Narendra Modi government.

He stated that he will choose the time of the debate and inform the House about it.

The Speaker announced that he had received a notice from Gogoi regarding the motion of no-confidence against the administration when the House convened at midday and materials were placed out on the table.

He called for those in favour of the motion to stand, and members of the INDIA alliance, including Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress parliamentary party, and Farooq Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference, stood up to take a head count.

Birla later admitted expressing a want of confidence in the Union Council of Ministers.

Following consultation with all stakeholders, Birla stated that he will set a date and time for a discussion on it.

According to senior officials of the front, the 26-party alliance of the opposition, INDIA, decided to introduce the motion so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would address the violence in Manipur in Parliament.

Opposition parties assert that they will win in the perception battle by cornering the government on the Manipur issue during the debate, even though the no-confidence motion by opposition parties is bound to fail the numbers test.

They assert that it is also a strategy to force the prime minister to address the vital issue in Parliament, despite the government's insistence that Union Home Minister Amit Shah respond to the discussion regarding the Manipur crisis.
