Digital Desk: Fresh tension has erupted once again in the conflict-hit state of Manipur following the killing of a Meitei man by armed miscreants, an incident that has caught the attention of every person across the region after disturbing videos went viral on social media.

As per reports, the armed men—suspected to be members of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA)—abducted the victim at gunpoint from the Tuibong area of Churachandpur on Wednesday evening. The man was forcibly taken away from his  wife and later executed in the Natjang area of Henglep. Viral clips show the victim pleading for his life with folded hands moments before he was shot twice in the torso, causing him to collapse instantly.

The deceased has been identified as Mayanglambam Rishikanta, son of M. Tombi Singh, a resident of the Uchal Makhong area of Kakching Khunou. Reports state that he had gone to Churachandpur to meet his wife, Chingu Haokip, for the first time since ethnic violence broke out in the state. Unconfirmed sources claim that the woman had obtained prior permission from local authorities, including representatives of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and Tuibong area leaders, to allow the visit.

Both Rishikanta and his wife were allegedly kidnapped by three armed men on the evening of 21st January. The victim was reportedly on leave after returning from Nepal.

Meanwhile, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) has issued a clarification, stating that it had no prior knowledge of the visit and was not involved in the incident.

Authorities are reportedly making efforts to trace the victim’s body in the Henglep area of Churachandpur district. Following the news of the killing, residents of Kakching Khunou gathered at the local market shed on Thursday morning to protest against the incident, demanding justice.

As of the filing of this report, protesters have blocked the Imphal–Sugnu road, burning tyres and staging demonstrations, leading to heightened tension in the area.
