Threatening members of the Garo community and asking them to vacate certain hill and plain belt areas of West Garo Hills by 2027
Digital Desk: The Meghalaya government has ordered a detailed probe after a threatening poster, allegedly linked to the terror outfit ISIS-K, was found in Tura town of West Garo Hills district on 28th January, triggering widespread panic.
The poster was discovered pasted on an electric pole near the Law College area at Araimile. Police said the provocative material carried symbolism resembling that of ISIS and contained a message titled “Warning to Garos,” threatening members of the Garo community and asking them to vacate certain hill and plain belt areas of West Garo Hills by 2027. The note claimed ownership of the land and issued an ultimatum.
Police have seized the poster and registered a case. An investigation has been launched to trace those responsible and to verify the authenticity and origin of the material. Videos and photographs of the poster have also gone viral on social media, adding to public concern.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong described the incident as serious and assured that necessary action would be taken. He said the investigation is underway and that the state government would not hesitate to seek assistance from Central agencies if required.
“This is a very serious issue. An investigation has already begun. If the state investigation feels the need for Central intervention, we are ready for that. It is too early to draw conclusions,” Tynsong said.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police said the situation remains under control and urged the public to stay calm, avoid spreading rumours or unverified information, and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
