The state government is making every possible effort to locate them

Digital Desk: A massive search operation is underway in Meghalaya for a newlywed couple from Madhya Pradesh after they went missing while on their honeymoon in Sohra (Cherrapunji). Despite six days of continuous efforts, there has been no trace of the couple. People across the state are concerned because tourism is central to their economy.

With four teams working on the ground, the East Khasi Hills District Police have stepped up the search and rescue operation. The teams are focusing on the rugged terrains of Nongriat and Mawlakhiyat, climbing spots where treks are common and where the couple’s last known location is located.

Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF) President Alan West Kharkongor said the situation is unfortunate. He speculated that it might be  possible that the couple might have fallen into the waterfall, as it is the rainy season or they might have ventured beyond Sohra without informing anyone.  Nevertheless, he confirmed that efforts are being made by state authorities to find them.

BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek, who is also a Cabinet Minister, recently visited Sohra to find out more about the situation. Officials and locals involved in the search discussed the robbery possibility with him, which he said seemed unlikely in the popular tourist area, but they are looking at every option because the missing woman was wearing significant jewelry.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh explained that Meghalaya’s terrain poses unique challenges. He urged tourists to always hire local guides when visiting offbeat destinations. He assured the public that Meghalaya is still a safe place to visit, adding that unfortunate incidents can happen anywhere. The authorities, including the Chief Minister, are closely monitoring the situation and are making every effort to locate the couple.
