Following a period of devastating floods and over 60 landslides last month, Nagaland's Mon district administration is set to propose a joint river basin management plan for the Dikhow river with neighbouring Assam. The move comes as authorities in Mon seek to enhance preparedness and mitigation efforts against natural calamities, which severely impacted the region in July.
Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak confirmed the district's intent to collaborate on the Dikhow river, emphasizing the urgent need for a coordinated approach. The region experienced intense rainfall on July 19, beginning around 1 AM and continuing until approximately 4:30 PM, which triggered widespread destruction. Official reports indicate that around 20 of the more than 60 landslides occurred within Mon town itself, with others reported from various parts of the district, including Wakching.
Beyond the proposed inter-state management plan, the Mon administration also intends to significantly intensify public awareness campaigns. These efforts will focus on educating residents about disaster preparedness and response strategies, aiming to empower communities to better cope with and reduce the risks associated with such natural events in the future.
The Dikhow river, which flows through parts of both Nagaland and Assam, frequently poses challenges during the monsoon season. A joint management strategy is seen as crucial for effective flood control, erosion prevention, and overall environmental sustainability across the shared basin, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in addressing trans-boundary ecological issues.
