Digital Desk: The Assam BJP President and Member of Parliament Dilip Saikia has urged the central government to rename the major rail routes between Guwahati-Delhi-Guwahati and Guwahati-Chennai-Guwahati in honor of Srimanta Sankardev and Srimanta Madhabdev. Saikia made his request for renaming the railway routes during the Railway Ministry budget presentation for Fiscal Year 2025-26.

As the representative for the Darrang-Udalguri constituency, Saikia emphasized the critical issues affecting his constituents because the Darrang district lacks adequate rail services which causes extensive trouble for residents. He emphasized both the requirement for fresh rail services and the immediate revival of several railway stops which were discontinued during the COVID-19 pandemic These include stations like Kheirabari, Dekargaon, Goreswar, Majbat, Tangla, and Udalguri. Restoring these discontinued stops will benefit daily railway users while improving communication between rural areas.

Saikia also recommended that the Vande Bharat Express for Dibrugarh-Guwahati service along Rangia and Udalguri to bring better travel solutions and improved railway service for northeastern regions. The new train service proposed by Saikia should link Guwahati to Jagdalpur in Odisha to develop connections between the two states. A direct transport link that benefits the Odia community in Assam would be particularly useful for them.

He also expressed gratitude to the Union finance minister and railways minister for the gross budgetary allocation of Rs 10,440 crore for railway infrastructure projects in the Northeast.

Saikia advocated that renaming rail routes as Srimanta Sankardev and Srimanta Madhabdev acts as a tribute to their significant cultural achievements in Assam. The proposals needed urgent attention from the central government to establish better rail connections that would protect Assam's cultural heritage through these important revaluations of names.
