Digital Desk: Terrorism has returned to Jammu & Kashmir with a ghastly attack on Tuesday, where 28 tourists lost their lives following an open fire by a group of terrorists at a popular tourist destination of Pahalgam district's Baisaran Valley.
The attack, carried out by a group of four to five terrorists, has been considered one of the deadliest attacks in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
The deadly attack came days after Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir's controversial "jugular vein" statement on April 16.
Indian Intelligence Agencies said that the attack was a calculated move.
The brutal attack also coincides with US Vice President JD Vance's first official visit to New Delhi.
India revoked J&K's special status, dividing the state into two territories- Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, empowering local authorities to issue domicile rights to outsiders. The rights allowed the outsiders to buy land and get jobs in the territory.
The revocation led to the deterioration of relations with Pakistan amid disputes over Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Witnesses said that most of the victims of the attack were male. A female tourist who lost her husband, Manjunath in the attack revealed that she and her son pleaded to be killed along with Manjunath.
However, the terrorist told her that he would not harm women and children and instead commanded her to inform Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the attack.
As per report, the militants asked the male tourists their names and instructed them to recite the Kalma (the Islamic declaration of faith).
Those who failed to recite Kalma were shot at close range.
Horrific visuals of the attack, showing bloodied bodies lying on the floor, are going viral on social media.
The assailants targeted non-Muslims and spared Muslims.
