Preliminary findings suggest suicide, with depression cited as a possible cause

Digital Desk: A tragic and shocking A tragic incident shook the IIT-Kharagpur campus on Sunday evening as a fourth-year student, Aniket Walkar, was found dead in his hostel room at JC Bose Hall of Residence. Two other students also died within twelve months, including Shaon Malik and Devika Pillai. The institute announced its profound mourning about the loss of a talented young student, Mr. Amit Patra admitted Aniket had shown signs of mental health issues.

The 22-year-old, hailing from Gondia district in Maharashtra, was enrolled in a dual degree programme in Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture. His end-of-semester exams were set to begin the next day.
Friends, groups, and college mates described Aniket as a bright student with excellent grades who had already obtained job acceptance. His death shocked everyone because he held a party on Friday and chatted casually about examinations only the day before his death.

The authorities were alerted on Sunday evening when Aniket did not respond to knockings on his door and telephone calls. Police arrived at the scene at 8pm to find the victim hanging in his room.  He was declared dead  at BC Roy Hospital. Medical authorities have transferred his body to conduct an autopsy at Midnapore Medical College.

IIT-Kharagpur has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. The preliminary police assessment confirmed that Aniket took his own life because of depression. The institution confirmed its dedication to student wellness through its continuous availability of round-the-clock counselling services for all students in distress. The family members of Aniket arrived at the campus on Monday night to meet with the police for updates on the case.
