Both the global leaders discussed various topics including trade, tariffs, and defence ties during their meeting at the White House on Thursday.

Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to the United States at the invitation of President Donald Trump. PM Modi arrived in the US on Wednesday and received a warm welcome from the Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and other officials at the airport. This was PM Modi's first visit to the US after Donald Trump's second term as US President.

Both the global leaders discussed various topics including trade, tariffs, and defence ties during their meeting at the White House on Thursday. Both PM Modi and President Trump signalled an interest to negotiate on the previously announced plans to impose tariffs on all US trading partners including India. This development showed a ray of hope for an exception to India.

The meeting aimed to increase bilateral trade between India and the US from the current $200 billion to $500 billion by 2030. Their discussions focused on artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and strategic minerals.

They also discussed the importance of strengthening military ties, including sales of F-35 fighter jets under a 10-year defence cooperation plan. They also focused on the issue of illegal immigration and a boost in oil and gas imports from the US.

After the bilateral meeting with PM Modi, President Trump heaped praise on the Indian Prime Minister. Answering a question, President Trump said, "He (PM Modi) is a much tougher negotiator than me, and he is a much better negotiator than me. There is not even a contest."

Excited upon PM Modi's arrival in the US, members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside Blair House to welcome him. They expressed their happiness as President Trump gave priority to PM Modi over other leaders across the globe.
