Digital Desk: An American-Lebanese man named Hadi Matar was convicted of attempt to murder and assault by a jury in western New York on Saturday for stabbing Indian-born British author Salman Rushdie. The 27-year-old Hadi Matar's sentencing date has been scheduled for April 23.

Hadi Matar stabbed the 77-year-old author with a knife multiple times in the head, neck, abdomen, and hand when he was on a stage at the historic Chautauqua Institution. The attacker also assaulted the interviewer Henry Reese, who suffered minor head injury due to the attack.

Due to the brutal attack, Salman Rushdie lost vision in his right eye, his hand was paralysed, and his liver and intestines were damaged.

Citing his reason for the attack, Matar said that he disliked the author because he attacked Islam.

The attack occurred more than 35 years after Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses", inspired by the life of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad. The novel then sparked outrage among some Muslim people.
