Security forces operating in Manipur have successfully apprehended an active cadre of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) [NSCN(K)] for allegedly running an extortion racket targeting commercial vehicles on National Highway-37. The arrest, made during a meticulously planned joint operation, underscores the persistent challenges faced by transporters on this crucial supply artery connecting Imphal with Silchar.

The individual, identified as Lungthaukhon Panmei, 32, was taken into custody on Saturday within the Kaimai police station area, situated strategically along NH-37. Officials confirmed that law enforcement personnel recovered several documents related to extortion activities, alongside ₹2,800 in cash, from his possession at the time of the arrest.

The apprehension was a result of precise intelligence inputs regarding an organized extortion ring preying on trucks ferrying essential commodities and petroleum products. The operation saw the collaborative efforts of the Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), demonstrating inter-agency coordination in combating insurgency-related crime.

NH-37 serves as a lifeline for Manipur, facilitating the movement of vital supplies into the state. Incidents of extortion by various militant groups have historically plagued the route, impacting trade and daily life. This latest arrest signals a continued commitment by security agencies to safeguard economic activities and ensure the free flow of goods through the region, providing much-needed relief to the transport community.
