In a notable administrative development, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) is preparing for a significant relocation from its traditional premises inside the historic Fort St. George to the Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai (NKM). Extensive renovation work is presently underway to prepare the new site for the move, which marks one of the most substantial changes to the Secretariat's operations in over a decade.
Officials familiar with the plans indicated that the primary catalyst for this move is an acute shortage of space at the existing CMO, which has struggled to adequately accommodate the growing number of officials, visitors, and delegations meeting Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay since he assumed office. The Chief Minister currently operates from the first floor of the Main Building within the Fort St. George complex.
This relocation draws parallels to previous administrative shifts within the state government. In 2011, the AIADMK government, under the late J. Jayalalithaa, reversed a decision by the preceding DMK government, moving key departments back to Fort St. George from the newly constructed Omandurar Government Estate. While speculation regarding other potential reasons for the current move persists, government sources maintain that the change is primarily aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and improving visitor management protocols.
