The truck lost control, veered onto the opposite lane, and crashed into the Bolero
Digital Desk: The bodies of two government drivers who tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident on Saturday, 6th October evening were handed over to their families after completion of post-mortem procedures at the Civil Hospital, Nongpoh.
The deceased were identified as Sanbirth M. Momin, driver of the District Sports Office vehicle, North Garo Hills, Resubelpara and Smart Sangma, driver of the District Agriculture Officer, Resubelpara. The body of Momin was taken to his house to be given the final rites and the body of Sangma was taken by his relatives to his home town Ampati to be buried.
Before the bodies were transported, family members, friends, and colleagues held a brief prayer service and sprinkled holy water as part of traditional and religious observances.
The accident is reported to have happened on Saturday evening where Momin with two colleagues was on his way to Shillong to fetch District Sports Officer Linza Fenny Syiem. On arrival to Umsaw Nongkharai, their Mahindra Bolero was hit by a speeding truck, which was allegedly driven by an alcoholic man. The truck lost its control, swerved on the other side of the road and hit the Bolero.
The collision was so severe that the Bolero was completely crushed, killing Sanbirth Momin and Smart Sangma instantly, while the third occupant sustained injuries. Following the incident, both DSO Linza Fenny Syiem and DAO Victor rushed to Nongpoh to coordinate with police, doctors, and the bereaved families.
Expressing grief over the tragedy ,Ampati MLA and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma expressed the condolence to the parents of the victims. He also expressed grave issues on the increasing road accidents due to careless driving and drunk driving and asked the government to implement tougher laws of traffic to avoid such tragic accidents in future.
