Digital Desk: Australia star batter Steve Smith has ended his One Day International (ODI) career after his county lost the semi-final match against India in the Champions Trophy clash on Tuesday.
Australia's one of the most decorated cricketers, Smith will continue to represent Australia in Test and T20I cricket.
Smith's ODI career spanned 170 matches, with 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96 per 100 balls faced. He scored 12 centuries and 35 fifties in his ODI career. The 35-year-old cricketer became the country's 12th-highest run-scorer in ODIs.
Smith was part of Australia's World Cup-winning squads in 2015 and 2023. He succeeded Michael Clarke as captain in 2015, but he had to leave the captaincy following his infamous ball-tampering scandal in 2018.
Cricket Australia media release informed that Smith spoke to his team-mates about the retirement plan following a heartbreaking semifinal loss against India on Tuesday.
Smith in a media release said, "It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. It feels like the right time to make way."
He added, "There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey."
