Digital Desk: A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Russia's far east region, triggering a volcanic eruption in the early hours of Sunday.

The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with a population of about 181,000. The quake, which struck at a depth of around 30 miles, led to the Shiveluch volcano erupting with significant force.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS and the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Shiveluch volcano began spewing ash and lava shortly after the earthquake. Visual evaluations reported that the ash column rose as high as 8 kilometers above sea level. Despite the dramatic volcanic activity, no injuries or casualties have been reported.

The Shiveluch volcano, located approximately 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, has caused significant concern in the region.

Residents experienced severe tremors, with furniture toppling and dishes breaking as a result of the earthquake. The Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences confirmed an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.7 that occurred at 07:21 Kamchatka time on Saturday.

Authorities are currently inspecting buildings, particularly social facilities, for structural damage. While the Russian Emergency Ministry has not issued a tsunami warning, the US Tsunami Warning System has indicated that hazardous tsunami waves could be possible within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter.

The situation remains under close observation as officials and scientists continue to assess the impact of the earthquake and volcanic eruption on the affected region.
