Digital Desk: The world celebrates World Post Day today, honouring the enduring role of postal services in connecting people, communities, and countries across the globe. Observed annually on the 9th  of October every year, is a reminder of the inception of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which started in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland- marking a milestone that transformed the world in terms of communication and collaboration.

World Post Day was officially declared by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. Since, countries all over the world have now participated in celebrating the event every year in honor of the development of their postal systems which has remained a life line to billions of people. Many postal departments use the day to introduce new products, enhance digital services, and promote the significance of postal networks in today’s rapidly changing world.

The 2025 theme, “#PostForPeople: Local Service. Global Reach.”, emphasizes the post as a vital public service deeply rooted in local communities while maintaining a global presence. With over one-third of the world’s population still offline and nearly half of all businesses not operating online, post offices remain crucial gateways to the digital economy—especially in rural and remote areas.

In addition to the mail and parcel delivery, the contemporary postal services are vital in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, such as poverty alleviation, equality, and inclusion in the economy.

As we celebrate World Post Day 2025, it serves as a reminder of the post’s evolving role—from a traditional mail carrier to a powerful agent of digital inclusion, economic growth, and social connection. Rooted in trust and accessibility, the post continues to bind the world together—one letter, one parcel, and one connection at a time.
